Data Protection

Data protection in Austria and in the European Union

What is data protection?

Everyone has the right to confidentiality of the personal data concerning him or her. This right is enshrined in the Austrian constitution as a fundamental right.

The society's need for information has to be balanced off on a case-by-case basis against the individual's interest concerning the protection of his or her private sphere.

At the same time, however, there are also legitimate interests in the use of data.

Find out more about data protection rights on the websites of data protection authorities, advisory boards and commissioners in Austria and the European Union.
