Information Society / BIG

Coordination of issues relating to the information society in Austria, Information Society Advisory Council (BIG), information society in the EU and worldwide

The Federal Chancellery is directly responsible for key areas of the information society, such as eGovernment.

Other issues are dealt with by other federal ministries or are cross-cutting issues that affect a number of government departments.

The Department of Media Affairs in the Constitutional Service division of the Federal Chancellery is responsible for coordinating issues relating to the information society.

Information Society Advisory Council (BIG)

The Information Society Advisory Council (BIG) is a forum for cooperation and information exchange on legal issues relating to digitization and the Internet between the federal ministries, business representatives, users and providers (Internet Service Providers Austria, ISPA).

BIG enables information and experiences to be shared regularly via initiatives and measures introduced by the federal ministries in Austria and also within the European Union, the Council of Europe and the Organisation for Economic Co‑operation and Development (OECD).

Coordination at EU level and worldwide

Notable coordination measures at European Union level include the positioning and implementation of the Digital Agenda for Europe/Digital Single Market, and at United Nations level the follow-up process for the World Summit on the Information Society (WSIS) and the Internet Governance Forum (IGF).
