The Austrian Bioethics Commission consists of 25 members representing the fields of medicine (especially reproduction medicine, gynaecology, psychiatry, oncology, and pathology), molecular biology and genetics, law, sociology, philosophy and theology. The length of the term is three years and membership renewals are possible. A chair person and two vice chair persons are appointed by the Federal Chancellor.

In addition to his many other functions, he is founder of the initiative NEIN ZU KRANK UND ARM ("No to sick and poor"), which is committed to providing quick and unbureaucratic help to sick people experiencing poverty and to mobilizing public support by acting as a mouthpiece for those affected by poverty.
